Eugene Morgan

In Loving Memory

Eugene “Gene” Oliver Morgan passed away peacefully on September 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 4, 1937, in Castleblayney, County Monaghan, Ireland, Gene made the courageous decision to immigrate to Canada in 1957. Alongside a close-knit crowd of young Irish immigrants in Toronto, he worked hard to build a new life miles away from home. It was within this vibrant Irish community, at the local dances where lifelong friendships were forged, that Gene met a beautiful young Irish lass named Eileen Lanigan. They married in Toronto in 1959, beginning a beautiful journey of love and partnership that spanned 67 incredible years.

In 1960, they moved to New York City, where they were soon followed by Eileen’s family. Together, they welcomed their first three sons: Mike (1962), Sean (1963), and Kevin (1965). By the end of 1965, the young family returned to Toronto to firmly establish their roots. Their family continued to grow with the births of Philip (1968), Noreen (1969), and Ann Margaret “Cushy” (1971).

Gene built a successful career in the construction industry as an ironworker. Known for his tremendous physical strength and unwavering work ethic, he earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the very best in his field. After decades of hard physical labour, Gene and Eileen embarked on a new adventure together. In 1986 they opened Morgan’s Place, a beloved pub on Liverpool Road in Pickering. The pub quickly became a cornerstone of the community, where laughter flowed, friendships were formed and lasting memories were made.

In his later years, Gene discovered a passion for golf. Although he picked up the sport later in life, his natural determination allowed him to quickly master the game. He was also an avid hockey fan, remaining fiercely loyal to his Toronto Maple Leafs—a constant source of both great entertainment and great frustration. In their retirement, Gene and Eileen also enjoyed spending their winters surrounded by great friends in Largo, Florida, where so many cherished memories were made.

Above all else, Gene was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife, Eileen; his children, Mike (Tracey), Sean (Janet), Kevin (Karen), Philip (Lisa), Noreen, and Ann Margaret “Cushy” (Ian); and his 14 cherished grandchildren, Danielle, Chantelle (Tom), Michael, Kyle (Savannah), Kiera (Nick), Erin, Liam (Asja), Keady, Mollie, Patrick (Connie), Mackenzie, Mikayla, Nolan (Miriam), and Joel. He is the proud great-grandfather of Roman, Margot, Edith, and Eileen. He is also survived by his loving sister, Patsy, and his brothers, Philip (Ann), John (Eileen), Denny (Helen), Gerard (Ann), and James (Mary). He was predeceased by his brothers, Michael (Anne) and Ignatius (Maura), and his beloved grandson, Keegan.

Gene will be remembered as a strong, hardworking, and deeply devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. His legacy lives on in the family he built and the many lives he touched along the way.
