George Okurapa

In Loving Memory

It is with great sadness that the family of George Okurapa announces his passing on January 11, 2025, at the age of 65. George was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend who touched the lives of many with his kindness, humor, and generosity.

Born in Kumi, Uganda, on January 1st, 1960, George earned a degree in sociology and political science from Makerere University before emigrating to Canada with his wife, Edidah, in March 1989. After arriving in Canada, George started his career as a carpet salesman and shortly after transitioned to his long career with the City of Toronto, where he eventually became the Community and Labour Market Manager and retired in 2023. In this role, George worked closely with the city’s employers to assess their labor market needs and help match qualified employees to their businesses. Retired but not tired, George also lectured on Canadian social policy at Seneca College, sharing his expertise with the next generation. Beyond his professional career, George remained deeply committed to giving back to his community. He served on the board of the Uganda Relief & Development Organization, always looking for ways to support those in need.

George married the love of his life, Edidah, in 1989. Together, they raised four children—Peter, Esther, Faith, and Jeldin. Though they began their journey as a common-law couple, George’s romantic nature couldn’t be satisfied with anything less than a formal celebration of their love. In 2001, after all their children were born and able to be part of the special day, George engaged Edidah, and they were married in a joyous ceremony. As a proud father and devoted husband, George was always there to support his family and community. His deep love and commitment to them were felt by all who knew him, and his unwavering belief in his children’s potential became one of the cornerstones of his lasting legacy.

Outside of his career and family life, George was a proud Rotarian and past president of the Ajax Club. Despite being a member for just over four years, George’s commitment to the principles of Rotary was evident, earning him the Paul Harris Fellow Award—the highest form of recognition given by the Rotary Club of Ajax. This award was a testament to his exemplary efforts, sacrifices, and dedication to service both locally and internationally.

George’s warmth, wisdom, and humor will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was a man whose footprints were left everywhere he walked, both literally and figuratively. His infectious smile, boundless energy, and positive spirit lifted the hearts of all those around him. Whether through a kind word, a shared laugh, or simply being present, George had a remarkable ability to connect with anyone. His unique blend of humor, compassion, and wisdom made him a beloved figure to all. A committed father, loving husband, loyal friend, and mentor, he touched countless lives, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, mentorship, and unwavering support. His generosity, humility, and belief in others made each day brighter for those around him. He was always quick to offer guidance, a listening ear, or a helping hand, and he was a beacon of calm and reason in every situation. George’s love for life, his devotion to those he cared for, and his commitment to lifting others up will live on in the memories of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 8th, 2025, at St. George’s Anglican Church, 77 Randall Drive, Ajax, ON. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in George’s memory to the Rotary Club of Ajax.

George’s spirit will continue to inspire, and his impact will never be forgotten.
