Joseph Allan McGrath

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Allan McGrath, who passed away peacefully on September 10, 2026, at Scarborough General Hospital, at the age of 87.

Born on July 4, 1939, in Tilting Harbour, Fogo Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Joseph lived a long and meaningful life marked by dedication, faith, compassion, and service to others.

Joseph was the beloved son of Austin and Agnes. He carried forward the values of family, hard work, integrity, and community that shaped his life and guided his many accomplishments.

A passionate educator, Joseph devoted 30 years to education as a teacher and school administrator. Throughout his career, he touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and families through his leadership, wisdom, and commitment to learning. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, and he took great pride in helping young people reach their full potential.

Outside of his professional life, Joseph was an avid outdoorsman who found great joy in nature. He loved fishing, boating, snowmobiling, and camping, and treasured the time spent outdoors with family and friends. Whether on the water, on a trail, or gathered around a campfire, Joseph was happiest when sharing those experiences with the people he loved.

Joseph also had a deep appreciation for music and was known to be quite the dancer. He enjoyed everything from traditional Irish music to the songs of Neil Diamond, and his love of music, laughter, and good company brought joy to family gatherings and community celebrations alike.

A devout Catholic, Joseph’s faith was a guiding force throughout his life. He was a dedicated member of his parish and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, serving both his church and community with humility, generosity, and commitment. Through his involvement with the Knights, he participated in numerous charitable initiatives, including school lunch programs and local food bank efforts, always seeking ways to help those in need. He lived his faith through quiet acts of service, compassion, and care for others.

Joseph is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 58 years, Marie ; his children, David, Stephen(Lisa), and Susan Roides(George); his cherished grandchildren, Anna, Erin, Alex, Abby, and Andrew; and his siblings, Fergus(Betty), Justin(Hilda), and Ellen(Bernie). Also, survived by the large group of nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law and friends.

He was predeceased by his siblings Kay(John), Florence(Dale), Loretta(Andrew), Len(Nancy), Miles, and Clarence.

Those fortunate enough to know Joseph will remember his warm heart, steady presence, strong faith, and unwavering devotion to his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, generosity, and cherished memories that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals at Centenary Hospital and Scarborough General Hospital for the exceptional care, compassion, and kindness they provided to Joseph throughout his illness.

A special thank you is extended to Dr. Ganeshram for the dedicated care, support, and compassion shown to Joseph and his family. Your professionalism, kindness, and commitment brought comfort during a difficult time and will always be remembered with sincere gratitude.

The family also extends its heartfelt appreciation to the home care nurses, personal support workers, and caregivers who assisted Joseph in the comfort of his home. Their dedication, friendship, and compassionate care helped maintain his dignity and quality of life while providing invaluable support to both Joseph and his loved ones.

The kindness and dedication of all those who cared for Joseph will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of Joseph would be appreciated by the family.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Isaac Jogues Roman Catholic Church on September 22, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. 

A private interment of cremated remains will occur at a later date.
