Joyce Lauretta Elizabeth “Betty” Rodwell passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and vibrant devotion to her family, her faith, and the arts.

Betty was born on March 5, 1928, in Siloah, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, the only child of Una and Samuel Welsh. Her early years were spent in Westphalia, in the Blue Mountains, where she enjoyed a healthy and active childhood under the loving care of her mother, a school principal.

At the age of nine, Betty moved to Kingston to attend Mary Morris Knibb Preparatory School and later Camperdown High School. Tragically, her high school years were cut short with the loss of her mother. She then relocated to Elgin, Clarendon, to live with her uncle, Theodore Hall, and his family. They welcomed her with open arms as one of their own, and she was cherished as a daughter ever after.

Betty adapted beautifully to country life, delighting everyone with her eloquence, grace, and outgoing spirit. When the family later moved to Manchester, she blossomed even more. She excelled in her exams, starred in school plays, and led her Pioneer Club to annual victories in creative and folk dancing. Her beautiful alto voice was discovered early, and she sang faithfully in the Presbyterian Church choir, and in duets with her mother at community concerts.

After teaching for five years at Ebenezer Elementary School, Betty followed her life’s dream and left Jamaica for England in 1951 to become a nurse. She trained at Hertford County Hospital until 1955. On March 3, 1956, she married her beloved husband, George Rodwell. Theirs was a deeply devoted marriage that lasted 48 years, until George’s passing in 2004.

Though they faced early heartbreaks, including the loss of their infant daughter, Angela Hope, their hearts were filled with joy at the birth of their son, Richard.

Betty built a distinguished nursing career. She served as a District Nurse with the Queen’s Institute in East London, bravely navigating the city streets on her bicycle in all kinds of weather. She later mastered overseas telegraphy before returning to nursing at St. Andrew Hospital in England.

In 1965, longing for the warmth of home, Betty and George returned to Jamaica, where she worked at Falmouth Hospital and the Trelawny Estates clinic. In 1967, they immigrated to Canada and made their home in Scarborough. For 15 dedicated years, Betty served at Scarborough General Hospital, rising to the position of Head Nurse. Health challenges led to her early retirement in 1983, but her calling did not end there. She continued caring for others in nursing homes across Scarborough and Pickering until she fully retired in 1991.

Years later, when George fell ill, Betty cared for him at home with devotion and love. And when he moved into long-term care, she visited him every single day without fail.

A woman of immense joy, Betty loved dressing up, shopping, and immersing herself in the performing arts. In retirement, she filled her days with line dancing and singing, bringing cheer to her community through groups like the Pickering Perennials, the Unpaid Bills, and the Discovery Place Singers. Above all, Betty was a devout Christian. She lived by the principles of her faith and lifted her voice in her church’s praise and worship group.

Betty was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a cherished family member, and a faithful friend. She will be profoundly missed.

She is survived by her beloved son, Richard, and daughter-in-law, Marcella; her siblings, Gloria and Vertent; her sister-in-law, Aunt Elo; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her dearly.
