Verne Candy Chhangur
In Loving Memory
Candy died peacefully on July 09, 2025 at Michael Garron Hospital. She is survived by her nephew Errol Chhangur and many other nephews and nieces.
Born at Fyrish Road in what was then Br. Guiana, prior to moving to Canada in 1969 she worked at Bookers Albion Sugar Estate as the Secretary to the General Manager. In her position, she was instrumental in helping many gain employment in various areas of the estate.
In Canada, she spent some years pursuing her passion of music as a singer/guitarist with limited success. She met her long-time partner Skip Evans in a band both were playing in and ended up becoming a duo playing the club/bar scene on the outskirts of Toronto. Skip a well-known Canadian guitarist at the time died at an early age in 1985.
In the late 1970s she began full time employment at the Association of Professional Engineers in the secretarial pool eventually becoming its supervisor, a position she held until her retirement.
A Presbyterian by birth in a family dedicated to serving others in various forms; educators, a social worker, a deaconess (church worker), a brother who was the General Secretary of the YMCA in Br. Guiana and a brother who served as Anglican Priest in Barbados. She was an active member of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Toronto.
She was pre-deceased by all of her eight siblings.
Very religious, which was exemplified in her generosity of time and money to various children organizations. She loved children and to the very end made a point of keeping in touch and having a relationship with children and grandchildren of relatives of her generation.
She donated her family home at Fyrish Road in Guyana, to an Evangelical Church Organization based in North Carolina with the sole purpose of it becoming a place of worship to carry on the family Chhangur’s legacy of service. Her goal was realized, as the church was dedicated on June 11, 2025 the day prior to her being hospitalized.
A life well lived; a feisty, independent woman to the end who made friends easily. She certainly did it her way!
